The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Rock Fans

It has been 20 years since the legendary game hit the market in North America, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like rock legends. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who's mastered the epic four-minute instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to the music. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio had already tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable impact for many musicians included, introducing decades-old groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. However, when the game took off, album purchases and radio play increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the songs they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, however once it got featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album remained not available in the US, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band during their US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and associated lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue than any of their records. It moved well over 500,000 copies upon release, while sales of their songs rose significantly at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated requiring months of practice of practice.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a profitable run when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to overshadow all other accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, with set to be a new product from the original publisher in development. A new studio has begun work on their first music game. The initial creators are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games might become like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue for future fans.”
