Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
